Ethereum gas fees represent the cost of computational work required to execute transactions or smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Gas is denominated in "gwei" (one-billionth of an ETH), and the total fee you pay is calculated by multiplying the gas used by a transaction by the current gas price. Since the EIP-1559 upgrade in 2021, Ethereum uses a base fee (burned) plus an optional priority tip (paid to validators).

Gas prices fluctuate dramatically based on network congestion. During periods of high activity — major NFT mints, DeFi protocol launches, token airdrops, or heavy on-chain movement driven by market volatility — the base fee can spike to hundreds of gwei, making simple transfers cost $20–$50 and complex DeFi interactions cost hundreds of dollars. During quiet periods, fees can drop to a few cents for simple transfers.

The EIP-1559 fee mechanism made gas price forecasting more predictable. The base fee adjusts up or down by up to 12.5% per block based on whether the previous block was more than 50% full — creating a more stable fee market than the original first-price auction system, where users had to guess what fee would get their transaction included quickly.

Layer-2 networks — Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, and others — batch transactions on top of Ethereum, reducing per-transaction fees to fractions of a cent while inheriting Ethereum's security. Monitoring mainnet gas fees is useful for timing expensive on-chain operations and understanding when congestion is high enough to warrant using a Layer-2 alternative for cost-sensitive transactions.
